The Syracuse Chiefs split their Sunday double header making up for the game that was postponed on Saturday against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. In game 1 the Chiefs fell to the Yanks 2-1 and in game 2 they were victorious getting a 2-0 win. Their record is now 15-10 placing them in 2nd place in the INT North.
Game 1 didn’t show much offense out of the Chiefs getting just 6 hits and only 1 run. The only RBI came from DH Curtis Thigpen who went 0-for-2 including his 4th RBI of the season. His batting average now stands at .186 this season. The run that was scored came from CF Buck Coats who went 2-for-3 with a run scored making his batting average .244.
David Romero took the mound for the Chiefs pitching just 3 innings but they were very impressive. He only allowed 3 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and K’d 4. He did get the loss however bringing his record to 0-1 this season and his ERA is now 1.84. The undefeated righty got the start for the Yanks and pitched another impressive game going 6 innings deep allowing 5 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and 6 K’s. He earned his 4th win of the season making his record 4-0 and his ERA now stands at 0.87. Jose Veras came to close the game out for the Yanks and did just that getting his 8th save of the season. The win is Scranton/WB 17th of the year giving them a record of 17-7 as they lead the INT North.
Game 2 was also very close but this time the Chiefs came out on top in a 2-0 win. The offense only collected 2 hits but they produced 2 RBI. RF Russ Adams got 1 of the RBI going 1-for-3 including his 8th RBI of the season. His batting average is now at .243 for the season. The other RBI came off from Curtis Thigpen who went 0-for-2 but got his 5 RBI of the season. The 2 runs scored came from Buck Coats who went 0-for-1 with the run scored and he was walked once. The other run scored came from 3rd basemen Sergio Santos going 1-for-2 including a double and a run scored.
John Parrish got the start for the Chiefs pitching a very strong game going 5 and 1/3rd inning allowing just 4 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk and 6 Ks. He earned the win for the club making his record 3-0 this season and his ERA is at 2.42. Mike Gosling came in to close it out and got his 2nd save of the season.
The Chiefs remained one of the hottest team in the minor leagues when they edged the Clippers in ten innings for their ninth straight win. Curtis Thigpen drove in a run in the bottom of the ninth on a sac. fly to send the game into extra frames and then John-Ford Griffin tripled home Kevin Barker in the bottom of the tenth to win it. Barker finished the game two for three with a homerun, two RBIs and two runs.
Jordan De Jong improved to 2-0 with three shutout innings of relief pitching. He gave up one hit and three walks with three strikeouts.
The Chiefs went down 4-0 early and while they fought back, they fell just short and they lost to the Bulls 5-4. Curtis Thigpen went two for five with an RBI and a run. Brad Hassey went two for three with a walk and two runs.
Michael MacDonald settled down after giving up four runs in the second inning but he still dropped to 0-2 on the season. He gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings of work.
Down 3-1, the Chiefs came from behind to beat Indianapolis 7-5. Howie Clark went one for four but the one hit was a homerun. He drove in two and scored twice. Curtis Thigpen went three for four with two doubles and a run.
Justin James picked up the win with 2 2/3 innings of solid relief. He gave up just one unearned run on one hit with two strikeouts and the win improved his record to 1-0 on the season.
This Chiefs topped Indianapolis 4-2 and Curtis Thigpen was the hitting star. He went four for five with a run and an RBI.
The game was chopped up because of a rain delay and it was reliever Ryan Houston who picked up the win. He struck out two in 1 2/3 innings.
The Chiefs dropped back to back one run games against the Bats today. In the first game, Josh Banks was hit hard and he gave up four runs in five innings and James Vermilyea gave up two runs in an inning and a third as he took the loss. Curtis Thigpen homered and he drove in two runs while Wayne Lydon went two for four with a double and two runs.
In the second game, the Chiefs managed just two runs in the 3-2 loss. Russ Adams had two hits including a solo homerun and Erik Kratz went two for three with a run. A pretty good start by Dustin McGowan went to waste and he gave up one run in six innings while Beau Kemp was credited with two runs without getting single batter out and he took the loss.
The Chiefs losing streak continued and this time it was a 10-5 loss to Buffalo that cost them in the standings. Geremi Gonzalez took the loss but he only gave up three the runs. The other seven were given up by James Vermilyea who appeared to be in there taking it for the team in a tough outing.
Curtis Thigpen had a nice game and he went two for four with a two run homer. Sal Fasano finished with two hits and one of them was a solo homerun.
The Chiefs took it to the Yankees today and won both ends of a doubleheader. In they first game, Kevin Barker had three hits and four RBIs and Curtis Thigpen had two hits, three runs and three RBIs in the 8-2 win. Josh Banks picked up the win with a seven inning complete game. He gave up two runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
The second game was closer but the end result was the same. Thigpen had the game winner with a walk off two run homer. Matt Roney picked up the win with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. He struck out four.
